Akpabio Withdraws From Senatorial Rerun

The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio, has pulled back from the arranged Akwa Ibom northwest senatorial rerun political race. 


Akpabio, who was a previous Senate minority pioneer, expressed this in a letter routed to the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Adams Oshiomhole. 

The Minister, in the letter, dated December 2, 2019, yet got by a Punch journalist on Wednesday, said a colossal obligation has been put on him as Minister of Niger Delta Affairs 

Akpabio said he won't forsake a basic national task set on him by Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd) in quest for a rerun political decision. 

He encouraged the gathering to compose the Independent National Electoral Commission, in accordance with Sections 33 and 35 of the Electoral Act, 2010, and present a substitution to run in his place. 

Akpabio in the letter, encouraged the national executive of APC to win on the director of INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, to redeploy the State Electoral Commissioner in Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Mike Igini assuming free and reasonable decisions must be held. 

He stated, "I wish to review that I was the up-and-comer of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District Election hung on the 23rd day of February 2019. 

"Upon the affirmation of Christopher Ekpenyong of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the indicated victor of the political race by the Independent National Electoral Commission, I tested the same at the National and State Houses of Assembly Election Petition Tribunal, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. 

"The Tribunal in a split choice by a lion's share of two to one (Honorable Justice W. O. Akanbi and Honorable Justice 0. D. Epub) rejected our Petition, while in a contradicting judgment conveyed by Honorable Justice Hahz S. Tahlr, the appeal was pronounced demonstrated and every one of the reliefs looked for was allowed. 

"Being disappointed with the choice of the lion's share judgment and upon the learning purposes of law and end contained in the minority judgment, we spoke to the Court of Appeal, Calabar Judicial Division which is a consistent choice conveyed on the ninth day of November 2019, permitted our intrigue and put aside the Judgment of the Lower Tribunal. 

"I have mulled over the basic national task offered on me by Mr. President which will be vital to Nigerians and specifically the indigenes of the Niger Delta area and have made plans to stay as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to additionally release my commitments and administrations to our incredible country. 

"It is on the reason of the previous and especially in accordance with the arrangements of Section 35 of the Electoral Act, 2010 (as altered) that I need to officially and deliberately pull back my candidature as the up-and-comer of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the prospective Court requested Re-run Election for the Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District.
