The mature teenager from West Bridgewater said she felt fairly certain that she had captured the crown after those awards were announced.
“That made me a little hopeful,” she said. “I was feeling pretty confident after I got both of those awards.”
Fisher, a sophomore at Cardinal Spellman High School, said she felt calm throughout the day, and enjoyed the company of the other contestants.
“[Normally] I get a little nervous, as people can, but today I was feeling strong and I was ready to do what I wanted to do, and I was really proud of myself for that. The other girls were amazing. They are all so talented and so sweet.”
That final announcement still was a little bit of a surprise.
“Words can’t describe it. I felt like I was in absolute shock. I couldn’t breathe,” Fisher said.
She’s also quite excited about representing the Bay State at the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen competition this summer in Orlando, Florida.
“Disney is my favorite place in the universe, so getting to go back as a kind-of-princess myself is going to be pretty cool.”
Fisher held the title of Miss Boston’s Outstanding Teen, which she won on Super Bowl Sunday. She had already started work on her platform – The Martin Richard Foundation – which she hopes to continue to spread across the state.
“It’s named after the youngest victim of the Boston Marathon Bombings and it’s all about spreading his message about ‘no more hurting people.’ It’s about getting more young people out volunteering in their communities, and about leadership among the youth. I’ve been going into a few schools and doing service projects with them, on little ways they can help in their communities.”
Whatever the occasion, Fisher said she’d like to spend a good portion of her year with quite a bit of traveling across Massachusetts.
“I’d like to exceed 100 appearances,” she said. “That would be pretty cool.”
