 German is considered to be one of Europe’s major languages. It is also the 9th most spoken language in the world and one of the top languages that is being studied by many students as a foreign language.

Unlike French, Italian, and Spanish, the German language is not considered as a romantic language. It is not music to the ears, often sounding hard and harsh and rather forceful. Nevertheless, German is considered as the intellectual language of Europe. It is known as a deeply philosophical and scholarly language.

10.Italy – 310,000 German speakers

Both Germany and Italy are two of Europe’s most powerful and influential nations. Moreover, both countries have shared a deep history and have patterns of migration. Currently, Italy is home to a small but highly influential German population with Italian passports. The concentration of German-speaking Italians is in the northern part of the Italian peninsula near the Swiss border.

9.Russia – 350,000 German speakers

Russia is the world’s largest nation in terms of land area. Looking at history, one can tell that Germany and Russia did not share the most congenial of times, as both countries engaged in intermittent warfare. However, this did not stop some 350,000 Germans from moving and making Russia their permanent home away from home. Most German-speaking Russians reside in the western cities of the former USSR.

8.Kazakhstan – 460,000 German speakers

Close to a million German migrants have made this former Soviet state their permanent home. Kazakhstan is home to a sizeable German-born population. These German migrants have blended well in Kazakh society and are currently contributing a great deal in terms of building up the Kazakh economy.

7.Canada – 485,000 German speakers

Canada is the world’s second largest country when it comes to sheer land size. Ironically, it is one of those countries with very low density, a case of too much land and too few people. This has made Canada as an immigrant nation in the last few decades. Having said that, close to a million Germans emigrated from Europe and moved to Canada – particularly in the cities of Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto, and even as far east as Vancouver.

Poland is Germany’s immediate neighbor to the east. The relationship of both countries have been stable in recent years but historically, the Poles have suffered great persecution under the hands of their more powerful neighbor. This tense relationship did not stop half a million Germans to emigrate and live in Poland where prices are lower and life is cheaper and much simpler.

German emigration to this South American nation started during the regime of Hitler and the Germans committed to Nazism. Most emigrants were Jews who were escaping persecution from Germany’s Third Reich. Brazil is the country with the most German speaking people who mostly follow Judaism.

Everyone must remember that the United States is basically a country formed by waves of migrations. Currently, close to 2 million ethnic Germans have permanently settled in the United States, with most of them residing on the East Coast states such as New York, Delaware, New Jersey, Maine, and Massachusetts.
