The man, whose hand was shattered by police bullets, was said to have rushed to the scene alongside others after the robbers had moved some money into another vehicle that they snatched
from a woman despite a cross fire between the robbers and
policemen. Eye witnesses told newsmen that at Paul Bassey Street by Brooks Street; residents were seen picking some of the money that had fallen from the robbers’ vehicle. They said the robbers were making frantic efforts to remove
the money into another vehicle as the tires of their vehicle had been shot by the police. One of the robbers was said to have wielded two AK47 guns shooting at every direction to scare road users. One of the eyewitnesses, Joe Inyang, said occupants of a Toyota Camry (a government vehicle with registration number AK705 C01) were coming from one of the new generation banks, where they a withdrew huge amount of cash. “As the driver was going through Paul Bassey Street, he noticed that some people were chasing him from Toyota Corolla. As he tried to link Brooks Street,
the vehicle crashed into an oncoming Toyota Camry that was
going along the street, it was then the robbers blocked access to the government vehicle conveying the
money. “It was at this instance that the robbers seized the vehicle, opened fire from all directions, and
shattered the boot of the vehicle and doors to get access into the vehicle and picked the money that was loaded in a Ghana-Must-Go bags.’’ They also said the armed robbers
were dressed in black polonium shirts apparently disguised as members of the State Anti Robbery Squad. Police is yet to react to the incident as the state PPRO, Ikechukwu Chukwu, is said to be away on a conference at Abuja.
