If we accept that science, in general, brings comfort or happiness, then it is a blessing and thus should be embraced by everyone aspiring for comfort and happiness.
The present world we live in poses a lot of challenges. Only skill and competence are necessary in tackling the challenges posed by the modern world.
The much-needed skill and competence cannot be attained through the mastery of rhetorics. The days of oratory are gone for good. Much as one is not discrediting the ancient philosophers, it is necessary to point out the abundant influence of science on the entire human race.
In virtually every field of human endeavor, science has contributed significantly to the betterment of mankind. From agriculture to industry, from transportation to communication and from education to commerce, science has done much to bring about positive changes in these areas.
In the days of our forefathers, subsistence agriculture was practiced. This method albeit its labor-intensive nature resulted in low productivity. We are all living witnesses to the gains of mass production occasioned by the use of modern agricultural implements such as tractors, riders, harvesters, plows just to mention a few.
These agricultural equipment are the products of science. The effective utilization of these equipment has led to mass production which has brought about the high standard of living. I am sure people will simply agree with me that life generally would not have been the same if nothing existed as a science.
The rapid increase in world population needed a rapid increase in food production to tackle the growing needs of the people. If this was not done, the world would have faced terrible food shortage. Thus, we can now see how science has saved mankind from malnutrition and even starvation.
Health is wealth, a healthy nation is a wealthy nation. No one living can measure adequately, the immense contribution of science in the area of healthcare delivery. The discovery and manufacturing of drugs, the invention of X-ray machines, and other important equipment used in medical laboratories, hospitals, and health centers would not have been possible without science. Life generally would have been in utter decay without science.
What would have happened to accident victims? What would have been the fate of ulcer, cancer, hypertensive, diabetic patients with other serious ailments? We can see the menacing scourge of the HIV which causes AIDS. It is only science that can unravel the mystery and perhaps tackle it boldly.
Science cannot be relegated to the background if we realize the immense benefits of science in the areas of transport and communication.
We do enjoy traveling, Trips to U.K and U. S. A or to different parts of the world, the world would not have been possible without science. The invention of the telephone, the airplane, telex, and fax machines and above all, the computers have helped in no small measure to boost our living standards.
Other fields of learning may have contributed minutely to human development but none has done as much as science. Education has been modernized, trade and commerce have changed from what they used to be.
In all, the greatest benefits of science can be felt in the industrial sector. Electrical and electronics departments have brought no less blessing to mankind. The construction and automobile industries are parts of the success tales of the benefits of science.
