In excess of 100 young ladies were abducted from the Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, in April 2014.
Talking on the hijack, which occurred amid his organization, Jonathan said he couldn't state whether he was correct or wrong on the grab, or that he was attempting to expel himself from fault.
He expressed this in a meeting with BBC on Friday.
His words: "Quickly the Chibok [schoolgirls] issue came up, we anticipated that Nigerians would be concerned.
'How would we get these young ladies out?' Within a few days, we saw individuals setting off to the US with Bring Back Our Girls notices.
How? Why? Also, obviously, Mrs. Obama got one of those notices. I can't assume liability for that snatching. I don't control Boko Haram. They are culprits.
"In any case, as a president, obviously you know it's not the president that goes to the fields. You have security and knowledge officers that take the necessary steps.
Give me a chance to concede that indeed, perhaps they give a valiant effort, however, their best was bad enough for us to recoup the young ladies. That I can't state I am correct or I am off-base.
That does not mean I am endeavoring to expel myself from any fault. Indeed I may not be reprimanded for the activity, but rather I could be faulted that my security and insight frameworks were not sufficiently able to have the capacity to save the young ladies.
"In the event that I was a lawmaker, will tell the entire world that the political aspiration fir any single office does not merit the blood of any Nigerian, by what method will I be cheerful that young ladies have been grabbed? I do not excessively sort of character."
