Flood Kills 44 In Katsina State

Flood has killed over 42 people in Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State.

Nigerian Pilot learnt that hundreds of people including women and children were critically injured as a result of the disaster and are receiving treatment at Jibia General Hospital.

Our correspondent reports that the flood which occurred after a downpour yesterday night also washed away hundreds of houses, including properties belonging to the victims.

It was gathered that areas affected by the flood include Kwuza, Dandutu, Sabuwa, Tukare, Tsohwar, Tukare, Unguwar, Maikura Wards all within the metropolitan area of Jibia.

We recall that last July, the state witnessed similar flood disaster and six people were reported dead while over 3,000 people were displaced in five local government areas.

A source close to State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) told our correspondent that presently over 26 out of 34 local government councils are now affected with flood disaster in the state.

The Executive Secretary of SEMA, Dr. Aminu Waziri said that rescue team was sent to the scene of the disaster to rescue the remaining people but however said “we are still counting dead bodies”

Waziri told newsmen said already victims of the disaster were relocated to Public Primary School to serve as temporary accommodation while the government has commenced supply of food and clothes to them.

Meanwhile Katsina State Governor Aminu Bello Masari has visited Jibia to sympathize with the victims, describing the disaster as an act of God.

Masari who wept on arrival on the scene of the disaster was shocked with what he saw and promised to rebuild the collapsed structures.
