Not just any Crocs, but a cartoonish 10cm platform version of the famously ugly shoe encrusted with Balenciaga gibbits and what looked like the kind of plastic fridge magnets sold in airports. Fashion has flirted with Crocs before - Christopher Kane was the first designer to collaborate with the brand - but the prospect of Balenciaga-branded Crocs takes the idea of an unlikely collaborations to a new level. The Crocs have been many things - practical, comfy, unisex and unbreakable - but they've never been cool. Until now.
Backstage, Gavasalia explained how he found Crocs incredibly modern and he'd been drawn to them because of the injection moulding technology used in their manufacture. "It's a very innovative shoe. It's light, it's a one-piece foam mould and to me these kind of techniques and working with these kind of materials is very Balenciaga," he said. Having never worn them before, the designer tried them for the first time this summer. Fashion has flirted with Crocs before - Christopher Kane has collaborated with the brand for two seasons - but the prospect of Balenciaga branded Crocs takes the idea of an unlikely collaborations to an new level."In the future you will be able to 3D print them at home because they are all one piece," said the forward-thinking Gvasalia. Not yet though. If you want what is shaping up to be the most talked about accessory of the season, you'll have to wait until spring 2018 when they hit the stores.
