The British designer came up with a collection for "a chic urban girl." That meant strong shouldered jackets, western boots, tiered monochrome prints and delicious dark denim. It looked fresh and desirable. Waight Keller's first Givenchy collection is staking a strong claim on crown of wearable cool. Or as Waight Keller said: "Powerful girls. Girls that own their look." Here are the five pieces your wardrobe needs.
Strong Shoulders
"You get the sense she has a city vibe to her but there's a polish," said Clare Waight Keller of her new muse. That polish came from the monochrome tailoring that the Givenchy atelier excels at. Powerful, strong shoulders provided a super-structure for coats and jackets, that mined the cool, new-wave side of the Eighties. The modernity came from lean silhouettes and abbreviated hemlines.
Western Boots
The Givenchy versions come tall with a slim heel, or low with an open back. Waight Keller put them with everything from knife pleat cocktail dresses to black double denim. Our advice? Get them in black or mustard with snakeskin tips.
The New Length
Waight Keller injected some sanity into a season of extreme proportions. Her favourite new length, for knife lave embellished LBD's and skirts embellished with lip motifs is bang on the mid-thigh. Not too short, but plenty leggy enough, this is the wearable mini.
Cap Sleeves
Eighties in feel, and in keeping with her strong shoulder line, Waight Keller worked the cap sleeve for everything from crisp shirting to flounced silk dresses.
Modern Animalia
Animal prints are already one of the season's big trends but Givenchy put a sophisticated spin on it by making it monochrome. Coats came with abstracted stripes that looked like they were slashed by claws.
