The Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi
Ambode, on Monday said his administration planned to deliver 20,000
affordable housing units in the next three years to bridge housing
deficit in the state....
The governor explained that the
government had embarked on massive urban renewal and slum upgrading,
while new sites were being created to address housing deficit.
Ambode, who was represented by the
Deputy Governor, Dr Idiat Adebule, stated this in Alausa, Ikeja, during
the celebration of the 2017 World Habitat Day, with the theme, ‘Housing
Policies: Affordable Homes.’
He added that the state had been providing an enabling environment for investment in the housing sector.
Ambode said, “The government has been
able to deliver a total of 4,355 housing units across the three
senatorial districts of the state under the ‘Rent-to-Own’ scheme.”
The governor noted that the theme of the
celebration was a clarion call by the United Nations to governments to
provide houses within the reach of the masses.
The Commissioner for Physical Planning
and Urban Development, Wasiu Anifowoshe, said the government had paid
special attention to environment, physical planning and housing.
In his lecture, Mr. Fola Arthur-Worrey, a
former Lagos State Commissioner for Lands, urged governments to
consider disparities in income while making housing policies.
The Director, United Nations Information
Centre, Lagos, Mr. Rowland Kayalga, commended the state government for
its efforts in ensuring safe and affordable houses for residents.
