Read excerpts below:

Can you briefly introduce yourself please?

My names are Agboola Peter Ademola people know me as Smooth Kiss. I am a producer and also an artiste, but I started as an artiste before going into music production. I have been into music for the past 10 years. I attended Blessed Grace Nursery and Primary School and Eyinni High School both in Orita-Challenge, Ibadan for my elementary and secondary education. I also went to Akinla Commercial College, Ile- Ife; it was there I obtained my Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE). I attended the Polytechnic, Ibadan for my National Diploma in Urban and Regional planning, after that I went for Higher National Diploma at Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Ogun State. I had my National Youth Service Corps in Ilorin, Kwara State in 2011.

Some producers do appear in videos show with their artists, do you think this is proper?

Foster Zino, one of the popular producers in Nigeria told me sometime last year that, back then producers are behind the work, but now everybody wants to be claiming celebrity. And the reason is not far fetched; we are now in the computer age, where people go to the internet to search for whose producers are updated and you know as a result of this everybody will wants to show their face. Also, the rate at which they (producers) are making money back then is different from now, in those days they make enough money from production, and you too can identify few producers that fall in this category. In this present age, the story is no longer the same because everybody wants to be known, everybody wants to be celebrity that is why you see them on videos. Based on PDD submission, I believe PDD is an old school artist and he is entitled to his opinion, what I can say is that the way music is being run in Nigerian is different from that of America. Because in America, music is pays and it can sustains itself. In America Producers get paid for any album or tracks, Here in Nigerian, we write the name of producer or director of the video because that is the only way to market them. So, the idea of featuring producers in videos is a good idea and development.

Do you have a record label?

Presently no, I don’t have but I am a producer under a label, because every record label must have its own producer.

Who have you worked with among the prominent artistes?

Thank you, I have worked with so many artistes in the industry, some of them include 9ice, Olamide, LKT, Soosi and many other like that.

What makes your style of music different from others?

There should be a kind of unique in whatever ones is doing, what I do to make sure I make my style different from others is that, I make sure that I add Ibadan vibe in my music. I mix both Yoruba and English together and I make sure people feel that Ibadan vibe in my music. This is just to let people know that I am from Ibadan. I ensure that to make my music unique, I code mix Ibadan with my hip pop.

What you do to enhance your performance on stage?

Yeah, that is wonderful! I make sure I do a lot of exercise to keep fit on stage. This makes it easy for me to move around the stage and carry my fans along with me everything I do on the stage. I also take a lot of water too, it is help a lot.

Where should we expect Smooth Kiss in the next five years?

Yeah, in the next five to come, I dream to be an international super star and I am praying about it everyday and night.

What are the things you think should be done in Nigerian Entertainment Industry?

Thank you, as regards that, a lot of things have to be done, Firstly, back then album sales help artistes in Nigeria, that was when Alaba Market was existing, then Dbanj and others were paid about 40 million naira for an album, if that is existing then people like us will be living bigger than this. During that time, If you are fortunate to be known in the entire South West, then you will have marketers to buy your songs or album and this will fetch you nothing less than 20 or 30 million naira. But now, there is nothing like that again, story has changed, this is because you can get every track of the song online and if you don’t have your song online it will difficult for people to know you or about your job. Secondly, there is issue of piracy bothering the little artistes that have their song on CDs, as a result of this, selling CDs is nothing to write home about, that is why artistes stopped dropping album again, they drop singles. Also, there is third problem; this has to do with radio air play. Radio stations expect artistes to pay before their music is being played on radio, and as you know it is a must. And if you refused or you just tip them your music will be played just for a short period of time and it will affect the artistes’ promo. This is affecting the upcoming artistes a lot, this is just telling us that talent alone is not enough in Nigeria; the situation is not the same in the developed countries like USA, where artistes get paid for playing their music in stations.

Artistes ride big cars, build big houses and so on but where do they get the money from?

The industry has gone bigger, a lot of private investors have invested in entertainment industry, particularly music, you know, it is not like it was before. Also, lots of parents are supporting their kids to do music nowadays. And again, because of the endorsement artistes are getting enough. You know, when you get endorsed you could earn yourself like 70 or 100 million of naira. Artistes get their money from endorsement and showbiz. You know, branding gives artistes enough advantage to make money, if you brand yourself very well it will earn you bigger endorsement. So, artistes are trying their best to be known and they don’t care about any amount they spend because once you are famous you can get anything you want. However, when the upcoming artistes are see the videos and the kind of life the popular artistes are living, they too will want to copy and live the same life, no knowing what they have gone through before they got there, that is why you see a lot of people complaining, because they are not doing music for the love it, but they are doing it for the love of money which is no suppose to be the priority. Most of the artistes including me are doing music for the love of music and we are making it, once you have someone that can support you 100% all you need is a little talent and you have a good team to work with, and with determination you can make it.

How do you make use of your leisure time?

Yeah, I work to relax and I love watching football. I watch all football clubs, because they all are my favourites, I watch Nigerian Footballers, and particularly Mikel Obi, he is my favorite footballer. I also have studios in and outside my house, so, once I know am in the mood of relaxing, I relax and then I walk a lot, I make sure that I walk at least for sometimes in a day to keep my fitness level.
