Board of Trustees of the TY Danjuma Foundation, a not for profit organisation, has presented a cheque of N197 million to 24 non-governmental organisations in Nigeria for the execution of 17 projects in parts of the country.....
The cheque was presented yesterday at this year’s Grantees’ Training for the partners, to implement life-touching projects in the nine states of the federation.
According to the acting chief executive officer of the Foundation, Gima Forge, the financial grant will be used for implementation of life-touching projects in the areas of community health and education in the nine states.
The states are; Akwa Ibom, Adamawa, Bauchi, Delta, Edo, Kebbi, Niger, Plateau, Taraba and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
“Each of the projects approved in 2019 grant cycle is truly special. They represent the best 5 per cent of the total applications reviewed by the Foundation,” said Forge, adding that “the cumulative grant amount awarded for the 17 projects is N197,000,000.”
Mr. Forge said the 2019 edition of the ‘grant cycle’ is in response to the needs of underserved communities in the focal states of the country, with an addition of new communities.
Executive director, Care Vision Support Initiative, Dr Pokop Bupwatda who is also one of the Grantees applauded the TY Danjuma Foundation for its impactful projects, especially in health and vocational skills in the country.
“General TY Danjuma does not want anything less for the people even though the drugs are very expensive to ensure that those infections are curtailed,” Dr. Bupwatda stated.
Bupwatda who said his organisation has covered the 16 local government areas of Taraba State, reducing the burden of preventable blindness, with direct funding by the TY Danjuma Foundation, says his Care Vision Support Initiative received N27 million from the N197 million to treat 3000 people with visual impairment.
“Out of it, we are targeting 300 surgeries in each of those areas. 3000 eyeglasses will also be given out free to those that have needs for them. 18 children who are blind from either congenital cataract or childhood developmental cataract are taken to Jos University Teaching Hospital for specialised surgery,” he disclosed.
Also, executive director of Kebbi State based Alkali Hussaini Foundation, Aliyu Hussaini said his organisation is getting N20 million grant for its 2019 projects from the approved N197 million.
“The project is to train 600 teachers. The concept is to develop new improvement methods of curriculum delivery. We will use Hausa Language in combination with English Language to improve on the ‘catch them young’ concept of the USAID, which is now being domesticated in Kebbi State,” he stated.
The TY Danjuma funded NGO is highly recognised across the North for its impact in vocational training and provision of grassroots education facilities in rural communities. The foundation is said to have trained over 560 women in Kebbi alone since its establishment.
The Grantees’ Training is designed to expose potential grantees to the Foundation’s grant making process and serve as a platform for organisations to network and build collaborative relations in the interest of the communities and beneficiaries.
