Window Cleaner Falls From Building In Oxford Street

Window cleaner is seriously hurt after plunging from a building onto Oxford Street pavement outside New Balance store as horrified shoppers tell of seeing 'blood everywhere'....
A window cleaner is in a serious condition after falling from a building in central London.

Horrified shoppers described seeing blood on the pavement when the man, in his mid-40s, fell from a building between Oxford Street and Harewood Place.

The incident happened at around 6.30am this morning outside the New Balance shop.

The man fell around 30ft and reportedly hit the tail lift on the back of a parked delivery lorry.

Roj Singh, a delivery driver, told the Evening Standard: 'There was the most horrible noise and two of the girls inside the shop were screaming.

'The son came straight down after him and was screaming too.

'The man was in a bad way on the floor. He clearly had broken arms and his ankles were twisted.

'He was covered in blood and screaming. Police and paramedics were here for a long time before they took him away.

The London Ambulance Service and an air ambulance attended the scene and the individual was rushed to a central London hospital.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: 'Officers were called at 6.30am on Tuesday November 14 to Oxford Street near Harewood Place.

'A man in his 40s, believed to be a window cleaner, had fallen from a height.'

The spokesman said the Health and Safety Executive had been informed.

Dan Smallbone tweeted: 'There's a lorry stopped on the pavement in Oxford Street, police all around it and blood on the floor.'

Another Twitter user with the handle @AlexScottlrv posted: 'Guy fell off the building (window cleaner) alive but badly injured.'

A different user said they 'saw the ropes' from the window cleaning equipment.

The Metropolitan Police said the surrounding roads would remain closed while emergency services deal with the situation.

Spencer Jones, 46, an accountant, said: 'I didn't witness the accident, I got off a bus and walked past. There was a 7.5 tonne lorry parked up on the pavement, lots of clothes and a suitcase all scattered behind the lorry.

'There was quite a bit of blood around the back of the lorry.'
