China To Test 10,000-Meter Manned Submersible By 2020

A Chinese developed manned submersible, designed to submerge to a depth of over 10,000 meters, is set to begin testing by 2020, xinhuanet.com reports....

Currently, the "door and window" for the ball-shaped capsule have been completed.

After complete, it will become one of the most advanced submersibles able to dive to the deepest depth in the world, allowing expeditions testing the Mariana Trench, the deepest part of the world's oceans.

The material for previous Chinese submersible Jiaolong was all imported. However, the new manned submersible is being independently developed by Chinese researchers. The main body of the capsule is made from a titanium alloy used in aerospace.

"Titanium alloys with higher strength than that of the previous Chinese submersible Jiaolong are being put into use. This is the first time to create the manned submersible that is capable of diving to a depth of some 10,000 meters," said Jia Shuanxiao, General Manager of Baoji Titanium Industry Corporation.

The 10,000-meter manned submersible will have a reduced number of welds to improve its reliability.

Development of the capsule's "door and window" is said to be a major step toward creating the new manned capsule.
