Throughout the history people from different backgrounds and with different motives created churches and today, we have so many of these beautiful buildings we cannot be silent about. They all have their own secrets, and apart from being the biggest churches in the world, there is a lot more interesting behind their size. We have decided to introduce you to the largest churches in the world and their history. You might find some of the choices surprising, but it was truly difficult for us to select the biggest ones, so we used the assistance of the fellow journalists from the Richest to see what they believe are the most spectacular and biggest churches in the world.
A list of the biggest churches in the world


  St. Peter’s Basilica, Vatican City.
This church is considered the largest church in the world. It is also believed to be one of the central temples of the Roman Catholics. It is constructed in the Italian Renaissance style and is located in Vatican City which is in Rome. It is quite unique and outstanding for all the Christians, as the tradition says that Apostle Peter was buried under this church. From the Bible, we know that Peter was one of the dearest disciples of Jesus Christ who, after Jesus resurrected, became the leader for the rest of the Apostles. He was the leader of the whole Body of Christ and help a lot of responsibilities.
The Pope sometimes preaches from this church. In fact, when he is in charge of the liturgy several thousand people come to listen to him here. Thanks to the size of the church, the building can accommodate so many of those willing to hear what he wants to say. The scale of the church is simply huge. For instance, just the statues of Peter and Paul, the saints of the Christian Church, are as high as Five and a half meters leave alone the columns and the rest of the inside interior details. So, this is the biggest church in the world.


 Basilica of Our Lady of Aparecida, Brazil.
 The next largest church in the world is located in Brazil, Aparecida. It is one of the most significant churches for the Roman Catholics. However, unlike the previous building no Apostles tombs or any records of them served as a motive to build this church. It is named after the patroness of the country.
The history of the basilica is extremely interesting. Here is what some sources say about it:
“Some people were trying to catch a large amount of fish in the ParaĆ­­ba River for a banquet honoring the visit of SĆ£o Paulo Governor, Pedro de Almeida in 1717. Despite their prayers, their attempts were fruitless until late in the day, one of the fishermen cast his net and pulled it back to find the statue of the Virgin Mary. Upon his next cast, he found the head.
The group cleaned the statue, wrapped it in cloth, and returned to their task to find their fortunes had changed and they were able to obtain all the fish they needed. The statue is believed to be the work of Frei Agostino de Jesus, a monk residing in SĆ£o Paulo.
 The basilica was built in the 18th century; however, it gained all its glory in the 19th after it was rebuilt.


Cathedral of Seville, Spain.
Another amazing church is located in Spin. To be precise, the church can be found in the city of Seville. It is a huge tourist attraction for people from all around the world as apart from being one of the biggest churches in the world, it is the largest cathedral.
The churches we mentioned above are basilicas, while the one in question is a real cathedral. This is the first things which make it outstanding.
 It was built in 1507 but in the years of 1987 and later it was rebuilt. It is constructed in the Gothic style which is quite typical of the Roman Catholic churches of those times. The church has tremendous size: it is at least 135 meters long, and 100 meters wide.
The highest place of the church goes up to 42 meters in a location. There are several tombs of famous on the premises of this church. For instance, Christopher Columbus and Ferdinand Columbus were buried here.
Another interesting fact about this church is that it is a part of the “Twelve Treasures of the Kingdom of Spain.” You can learn more about it online; it is quite a unique list of wonders.


Cathedral of St. John the Divine, United States.
This Church officially carries the name of the Cathedral Church of Saint John: The Great Divine in the City and Diocese of New York. It is located in Manhattan in New York. It was constructed in the Gothic Revival style out of limestone and granite which makes it an outstanding piece of art.
 Unfortunately, the church was set on fire sixteen years ago. And even though it was closed for some time for restoration, the works there are still in progress, as it takes the time to restore the original view of the church of such a scale.
It is the Anglican church unlike the previous three items on our list. It was first opened in 1941. It is interesting that the money raised for the construction of this church was given to the American Army as well as to charitable establishments because the country got involved in the war. Today, it is quite popular among the tourists given its location, history, and general look.


Cathedral of Milan, Italy.
This building can accommodate around 40,000 people. It is at least 158 meters long and 92 meters wide. However, apart from being the fifth biggest church in the world, it is also one of the most time-consuming architecture projects in the history, as it took the architects six centuries to build it to the end. The beginning of the construction was in 1386. It served as a thank you to the people who were oppressed and suffered when the previous ruler was on the throne.
However, since it took six hundred years to finish the church construction, the facade changed a lot, and now one can track the influence of different epochs in the building.


Cathedral of Liverpool, UK.
 The sixth largest church auditorium in the world is the Cathedral of Liverpool, the United Kingdom. This church only has one tower. The cathedral is at least 188 meters long and has around 35 meters in its highest place. These measurements make this cathedral the longest one in the whole world.
The building the way we know it today was first opened in 1978 for a Thanksgiving service. It is dedicated to Jesus Christ in the glory of His miraculous Resurrection.


 Shrine of Our Lady of Lichen, Poland.
Another Roman Catholic Church is located in Licheǹ„ Stary, Poland. The story of how the idea of the creation of such a beautiful church arose dates back to the years Napoleon was trying to conquer Europe.
 Back then a soldier “was fighting under Napoleon near Leipzig was severely wounded. He invoked Our Lady, begging her not to let him die in a foreign land. According to legend, she appeared to him wearing a golden crown, a dark red gown, with a golden mantle and holding a white eagle in her right hand.
She comforted the soldier and promised he would recover and return to Poland. Tomasz was instructed to have an image of her made, and to place the picture in a public place so that My people will pray before this picture and shall draw many graces at My hands in the hardest times of trial.”
 That is how the soldier was inspired to create such a beautiful building.


Basilica of the Holy Trinity, Portugal.
This can accommodate at least nine thousand people. Unlike the rest of the churches on our list, this one is very young. It was constructed between the years of 2004 and 2007 by Alexandros Tombazis. It is nothing like the other Gothic buildings, but is rather modern, fresh and is a real example of the state-of-the-art structural engineering. It is located Cova da Iria, FƔtima.
 The church is around 95 meters long and 115 meters wide. It is not always open, so the tourists have to make sure they know its schedule before going there. The building has at most sixteen confessionaries in each chapel. The church has two different parts. The first one accommodates more than 3100 people, while the second one can accommodate almost 5500 visitors.


 Basilica of the Sacred Heart, Belgium.
The construction of this secular building was dedicated to the sacred heart of Jesus Christ. Located in Belgium, this church is a Roman Catholic church constructed in the Art Deco style. It is around 164 meters long and 107 meters wide.
Today, this church is a real tourist attraction as a lot of people want to see this unique building. They can come and visit the liturgies held the church in French and Dutch.
The premises also have room for a local cuisine restaurant, several shops, the place to hold exhibitions, conference halls and vast areas for big Christian conferences as well as a theater and a couple of museums. It is an interesting place to visit.


 Basilica of Our Lady of Peace, Ivory Coast.
The last church on our list of the largest church auditorium in the world is the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace, Ivory Coast. The architect whose name is Pierre Fakhoury was inspired by the view of the Basilica of Saint Peter in Vatican City and has decided to initiate a construction of a church quite similar to the first one on our list.
Thus, in 1985 the construction works began, and in 1990 the building was given to Pope John Paul II as a gift. The building is around 150 meters long and almost 55 meters wide. The church has enormous premises. The building can accommodate around eighteen thousand people. The cost of the church construction was around $150 to $600 million.
