So it's no surprise that Rihanna, 29, made sure to stop by V Festival in Chelmsford, Essex, to see Jay-Z, 47, close the event with his headlining set on Sunday evening.

Unbeknownst to fans, the Umbrella hit-maker managed to sneak into the festival and hide out backstage to watch her pal in action.

fter managing to secure her spot backstage - and with a great view of Jay-Z performing to the huge crowds in front of her - Rihanna gave her appearance at V Festival away by documenting her night on Instagram.

Filming a slew of videos for her Instagram story on the photo-sharing app, Rihanna was heard singing along to the rapper's famous tracks, while recording Jay-Z as he put on an animated performance.

She appeared to surprise fans, however, as many took to Twitter to share their disbelief at her attendance.

Disappointed that she hadn't joined Jay-Z on stage - especially as he had performed their track Run This Town - festival-goers penned: 'No way was rihanna back stage when jay z was playing why didn't she come on.

Although another appeared to commend Rihanna for choosing to stay out of the limelight, as they tweeted: 'I love how Rihanna just turned up at V to watch Jay Z but not to sing.'
