So it may come as a surprise to discover that some royal family members harbour a secret love of body art and piercings.

Here are the tattoos and piercings royals have had that you may not have known about...

Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton had a henna tattoo inked onto her hand at the beginning of 2018 as she attended an official engagement.

The 36 year old and Prince William spent over an hour talking to the young people before Kate got a small motif on her hand.

After their outing, royal fans became frantic about the fact Kate had ‘got a tattoo’, as she proudly showed off the pretty design.

Flowers in henna symbolise joy and happiness, while a bud is often seen on the palms of newly-wed brides or soon-to-be mothers.

Zara Tindall, who recently welcomed her second child with husband Mike Tindall - a younger sibling for daughter Mia - defied a lot of typical royal conventions when younger.

She surprised a lot of royal fans by getting a tongue piercing.

She wore a metal stud throughout her late teens, although it is not known if she still has the piercing.

Young royal Lady Amelia Windsor is 37th in line to the throne, and has three tattoos.
