Foods That Contain More Sugar Than You Realize


Consuming excess sugar has been connected to anincrease in your risk of developing several diseases including obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and cancer....
Because of this, it is advisable that you minimize the amount of sugar you consume regularly.This might be a bit difficult because it’s not really easy to estimate how much sugar you consume daily. This is because a lot of the foods we eat contain hidden sugars. This may be the case even for foods
labeled “zero sugar”or “light”.Here are some foods and drinks that contain more sugar than you realize.

1. Low-Fat Yogurt

Yogurt is a healthy nutritious food, however, yogurts labeled low-fat often have sugar added to them to enhance their flavour. Low fat yogurts also do not have all the health benefits that full-fat yogurts have. You should avoid low-fat yogurts or reduce your intake.

2. Canned Fruit

While all fruit contains natural sugars, canned fruit is peeled and then placed in sugary syrup for preservation. This causes the fruit to lose most of its fibre while also adding a lot of unneeded sugar.

3. Fruit Juice

Fruit juice may contain some of the vitamins and minerals of whole fruits, but it is not as healthy. Fruit juice often contains more sugars as it takes a lot of fruits to make a single glass of fruit juice. This means you’re taking in a lot of sugar without the fibre to help slow down your body’s digestion of
allthat sugar. Eating whole fruit is thus preferrable to drinking fruit juice.

4. Ketchup

Ketchup is often loaded with sugar. One tablespoon of   ketchup often contains up to a teaspoon of sugar so its best to reduce your intake of ketchup.

5. Iced Tea

Iced tea is chilled tea which is then flavored with syrup. One cup can often contain as much sugar as a can of coke. To avoid taking in that much sugar, It’s best to stick to regular tea instead of iced tea.

6. Sports Drinks

Sports drinks are designed to help hydrate and power athletes for long periods of exercise so it often contains a lot of added sugars. Sport drinks have also been linked with obesity and metabolic disease. Due to this, you should only take sport drinks if you’re an athlete or need energy and hydration.
