McDonald’s Is Replacing Their Plastic Straws With Paper Ones Across The UK And Ireland

McDonald’s have made a huge decision to help cut down their use of single-use plastic products.The famous fast-food chain will be replacing all their plastic straws with paper ones over the next year. The changes will be made to McDonald’s all over the UK and Ireland following a trial.The trial was very successful, with McDonald’s chief executive of UK and Ireland Paul Pomroy saying: “Our customers told us they wanted to see a move on straws but to do so without compromising their overall experience when visiting our restaurants.”....

He also added: “Over the past few months we’ve been working closely with supplier partners to find a solution that works both for our customers, and that the supply is there given the size of our business.

“The Government’s ambitious plans, combined with strong customer opinion, has helped to accelerate the move away from plastic and I’m proud that we’ve been able to play our part in helping to achieve this societal change.”

The changes are being made to cut down on plastic pollution, which can seriously harm fish and other marine wildlife if it ends up in the Oceans.

The process will start in September, and will be finished with the changes to the 1,361 McDonald’s by next year.  

Prior to these planned changes, McDonald’s had already made an effort to cut down on plastic waste by keeping their plastic straws behind the counters instead of a free-for-all system.

The big change has had the seal of approval from Michael Gove, Environment Secretary.

He said: “We all have a responsibility to our environment and this simple yet effective initiative is a fine example to other large businesses.”
