(She first earned buzz back in 2013 when Opening Ceremony stocked her helmet hats.) This season, she took inspiration from winter coats worn by construction workers around the city. A fat puffer in highlighter yellow with strips of Cyrillic phrases banded across the body was a cool look. Also in the mix was a neon vest stamped with a cartoon alien—Makarova’s signature logo—and an optic white windbreaker with reflective details.
Thinking beyond outerwear, Makarova created other pieces out of used clothes from Kiev’s secondhand market Lesnoy. A long dress was made out of a bed sheet printed with an image of the Backstreet Boys on it, and a shirtdress was cobbled together out of colorful bazaar-plucked tote bags, some with the handles still intact. The idea was cheeky and fun, but the real selling point is still in her workwear. With a little more variety, Makarova could carve out a place for herself in the international market.
