When the Duke and Duchess officially announced their engagement, Kate proudly showed off the iconic sapphire ring.

And while it is now known as one of the most famous pieces of jewellery in the world, there was once a lot of controversy surrounding the jewel.

According to Vogue, in 1981 Prince Charles presented his wife-to-be with a selection of rings by crown jeweller at the time, Garrard.

Prince William and Prince Harry’s mother was able to choose her own ring from a collection by the design.

Diana chose the Ceylon sapphire stone set in white gold.

Surprisingly at the time, this ring was “a stock item” – in other words, anyone could buy it if they had the money.

Vogue report that at the time the ring was criticised by some, including some members of the Royal family, because it was not a bespoke item and was available for anyone to purchase.

Nevertheless, Princess Diana went on the wear the ring throughout her marriage and even after she divorced Charles.

Now, Kate wears the stunning ring, aware of the sentimental and historical meaning behind it.

When William and Kate got engaged in 2010, he said the ring was his “way of keeping her [Princess Diana] close to it all”.

Kate added: “It’s beautiful – I hope I look after it! It’s very special.”

Many jewels in the Royal family are bespoke items, including Meghan Markle’s engagement ring, which Prince Harry designed himself.

The Duchess of Sussex’s ring has three diamonds, the main one being from Botswana – a place special to them as a couple – and the other two from Princess Diana’s jewellery collection.
