Knowing what is appropriate to wear to a wedding ceremony is the first rule for getting your wedding guest duties right. Ignorance is never an excuse when it comes to your fashion choices for a nuptial event.

1. Don’t wear white to a wedding

Now this is a almost a universal rule; never wear white to a wedding except the bride says otherwise. It is considered rude to wear white to a wedding because it translates to you trying to take the shine from the bride.

A wedding is a fantastic opportunity to break out your colourful outfits. This is probably one of the reasons why African wear their Ankara fabrics and lace to such ceremonies. Wearing prints as a guest adds a vibrant quality to the whole atmosphere of the event as well.

2. Don’t wear head to toe black

Never ever wear a complete head to toe black ensemble to a wedding except you want to be seen as an harbinger of doom (we bet they won’t even let you stay for the ceremony). Black is a never a good idea for a wedding because of obvious funeral-related reasons

Do wear your black outfit with other colors

A black outfit is not totally written off at weddings, you just have to wear it right. Pair your black with other bright colors and you will never be at risk of being the guest everyone stares at in horror.

3. Don’t wear outfit that show too much flesh

The attention should be on the bride and the groom , its their big day after all. When a guest shows up at a wedding ceremony wearing outfit that shows too much flesh they are practically saying ‘look at me instead’ and that definitely doesn’t show support for the couple getting married.

Do keep it classy

Its possible to looking sexy to a wedding ceremony without overdoing it. Go for classy and fitting pieces that will play up your skin tone and figure.

4. Don’t be a slave to heels

We know you want to make an impression at that wedding ceremony but you don’t have to do it at the expense of your comfort. Wearing heels for too long will eventually cause you pain and you can’t enjoy the ceremony when you are in pain.

Do wear a simple flat

Weddings involve a lot of standing, walking and dancing, so if the heels won’t tide you over till the end of the event, a simple flat will work perfectly well too. Just make sure they look good with your outfit.

5. Don’t wear over-dramatic outfits

Its a wedding not a fashion show. You shouldn’t wear over-dramatic outfits for the same reasons why you shouldn’t show too much flesh; it takes the attention away from the bride and groom and puts on you.

Do wear simple outfits

You don’t necessarily have to break the bank or get a new outfit to attend a wedding in. Styling your regular outfits properly can stand you out in its own way too.
