Chelsea have completed a deal worth up to £34.2million for
Roma defender Antonio Rudiger.
The Germany international has tied up his move to Stamford Bridge following his nation’s Confederations Cup triumph.
Standard Sport understands that Chelsea will pay a transfer fee of £30.7m plus £3.5m in add-ons, while the defender will earn £77,000 a week.
Chelsea came close to buying the 24-year-old, who can also play at right-back, last year only for him to suffer a knee ligament injury.
Coach Antonio Conte wanted at least one centre-half this summer, but
the club have so far failed to acquire first-choice targets Virgil van
Dijk and Leonardo Bonucci. The Rudiger announcement will alleviate some of the damage done by losing out on Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United, with Conte livid at seeing his number one striker target sign for a potential title rival.
