1. The friend you’d absolutely list as an emergency contact.
If you’re ever going through something, they’re there with a bed for
you to sleep in and a 12-step-plan on how to address your current
ailment or major life conflict. You legit would maybe call them before
your own mom...
2. The “pick up right where we left off” friend.
You’re both super busy and finding the rare night that works for both
of you feels like winning the lottery. But when you do meet up, it’s
like nothing’s changed, even if you have a lot of catching up to do.
You’re just comfortable.
3. The friend you’ve known forever.
Sure, in some ways, you and your childhood BFF may have
grown apart.
But even if they stayed in your hometown and you moved away, you still
share this common, super-strong bond of being brought up together in the
same place. There are some things none of your other friends will
understand but them.
4. The work BFF.
Having someone to grab a quick coffee with or vent to in a conference
room is a huge game changer. With them, work is actually...kind of fun?
5. The "always a safe space" friend.
It's not that you suppress big parts of you around your other friends,
but this person loves you so much that you could tell them almost
anything and feel like they'd understand, even if it's a critique of
them. AKA, you never need to preface with "this is a safe space, right?"
With them, it's always a given.
6. The identical-tastes-as-you friend.
You know exactly what shows or bands they’ll fall in love with, because
you literally love all the same things (and love geeking out about them
together). While everyone else’s eyes glaze over when you talk about Call Me By Your Name, they’re the ones serving you trivia they read on IMDB.
7. The friend who lives across the country.
Yes, when they moved, you were devastated, but TBH, you text and chat
all the time and it only gives you a reason to book a flight to
California more often. Thank god for Facetime!
8. The “F*ck it, let’s go out” friend.
After a bad breakup, it’s good to be calm and rational about how to
move on without lingering resentment for your ex. However, sometimes you
need a friend who’ll say “screw men, let’s get shots” and let you vent
for as long as you need to.
9. The annoyingly healthy friend. While getting up at
10am on a Saturday is no small feat for you, they’ve already run five
miles and crafted the most Instagrammable açaà bowl. You’ve accepted
that you’ll never be exactly like them, but you appreciate them for
introducing you to hiking and yoga without judging your inability to do a
push up.
10. The friend who’s (literally) in the family.
Whether they’re a sister or cousin, having someone to exchange annoyed
glances with when your extended family is being ridiculous at dinner is a
powerful thing.
11. The ambitious-planning friend.
They’re never satisfied with just grabbing drinks, so they’re always
the ones scheduling a big squad outing or detailed road trip you can’t
wait for. Half your most interesting life experiences have come from
being their friend.
12. The friend you can be your laziest self around.
Sometimes, you don’t feel like talking a lot but still want a friend
around. Together, you can comfortable sit and watch hours of TV without
feeling the pressure to fill the silences when you’re just too
exhausted. In some ways, they know you better than anyone.
