A senior
member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Sam Nkire,
has described former president of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, as
not only an asset, but one of the greatest leaders ever produced by
Africa...
Commenting on Obasanjo’s latest work on
development titled “Making Africa work”, Chief Nkire said the former
president is also a gift which the African continent must make use of,
“before night falls.”
Nkire said at above 80 years of age,
Obasanjo’s wealth of experience must be tapped by African governments,
especially his latest belief that agriculture was the surest path to the
continent’s greatness and development.
A one-time commissioner for agriculture
in Abia State, Nkire said Obasanjo’s vision on Africa’s development was
in line with APC’s vision on Nigeria’s development as being pursued by
the party at the moment.
The APC stalwart stated his conviction
that Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture, Chief Audu Ogbeh, whom he
described as “a co-farmer and friend of Obasanjo’s”, would deliver
Nigeria’s agricultural dream this time around.
Nkire also leant his support to the
former president’s conviction that over-population remains another
threat to Africa and, by extension, Nigeria’s future development, adding
that a situation where a people’s food production rate cannot keep pace
with population growth could lead to perpetual poverty and hunger.
He enjoined Obasanjo to continue to
intervene in matters related to Africa’s development and urged Nigerians
to take advantage of the former president’s wealth of experience
instead of treating him like “the prophet without honour in his place.”
