Tragedy struck at Igbekebo yesterday, the headquarters of
Ese-Odo Local Council of Ondo State, when a student of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic,
Owo, Oladotun Olagundoye, was found dead in a river...
Olagundoye, an HND II Mathematics student of the
institution, had followed his friend, one Gboyega, for the burial ceremony of
his father on Thursday, August 31, 2017.
The Guardian gathered that the deceased went to the river
with Gboyega and some of his friends to swim, where he met his untimely death.
“He (Oladotun) and some of his friends, including Gboyega,
his host, went to the river, but he was the only one who pull off his clothes
and jumped into the river. After some time, he could not come up again,” said a
source, who pleaded for anonymity.
According to the source, the body of the deceased was found
by the marine police in the town four days after the tragic incident.
He added that Gboyega and three other friends have been
arrested and detained at the Special Investigative Bureau of the Ondo State
Police Command for interrogation.
The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Femi
Joseph, confirmed the incident and said the command had commenced investigation
into the mysterious death.
He said: “The report we have is that the deceased followed
his friend to a jetty in the town and he put off his clothes and jumped into
the river. He told his friend that he was a good swimmer. But some hours after
he jumped into the river, he did not come up.
“Later his lifeless body was found floating in the river
after four days of frantic search. His friends are with us helping us in our
investigation and autopsy would be conducted.”
The PPRO, however, noted that there was no foul play
suspected in the death of the student in the investigation conducted so far.
The body of the deceased, the police spokesperson said, had
been deposited at the Ondo State Government Hospital, Ode Irele.
