Rooney Mara has grown up a lot since she was The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo—not least of all in her fashion sense. The actress and October cover star began to harness a Gothic message on the red carpet shortly after her breakout turn in the 2011 psychological thriller, and has continued on a similar path ever since. Which makes taking a look back at her wardrobe choices prior to her transformation that much more interesting.
Mara started out as fresh-faced as ever, favoring ruffles and graphic prints at appearances. After Tattoo, she began switching up her beauty look alongside her attire, favoring a bold lip and a choppy new haircut that seemed a perfect match for her new neutral tones and structured silhouettes. While Mara now loves nothing more than a monochromatic palette, she has kept it interesting with a well-placed cut-out or a one-shoulder neckline—many by Givenchy Couture, as seen at the 2012 Academy Awards and Met Gala, respectively. While she’ll sometimes throw a bit of frilly flounce into the mix (and loves a good lace look), Mara does it in a way that feels punk instead of precious. See the Dior fit-and-flare frock she wore at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, which, while unabashedly feminine, was made cool and compelling by the addition of a dark tinted sunglasses and spiked black pumps.
