The fashion industry continuously evolves to adapt to the constant changes in fashion trends. This also triggers fierce competition between brands as they strive to provide the best wardrobe choices for the masses. As of now there are more than a hundred brands in the world, but not all of them are recognized as they are overshadowed by bigger names in the industry.

Gianni Versace S.p.A. was founded in 1978 by Gianni Versace, and has become one of the leading brands in Italy before expanding to the global scene. Some of the products that include the brand’s Medusa logo include haute couture, watches, fragrances, eyewear, and even home furnishings. After Gianni’s murder in 1997, his older brother Santo helmed the company as CEO while sister Donatella became creative director.

Coach saw its humble beginnings in 1941 as a workshop in New York City that produced billfolds and wallets. The company eventually expanded to a vast array of accessories such as bags, footwear, outerwear, and many others. Around the 20th century, with their continuous offerings to the industry, Coach was billed as the first American house of leather. Nowadays, the company also supports philanthropic organizations through The Coach Foundation. Coach is currently led by CEO Victor Luis, and has established a presence in several countries around the world.

Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, a pair of fashion designers in Milan, released their first collection in 1985 which was met with poor sales. Dolce & Gabbana designed swimming costumes, leotards, underwear, and later on released a fragrance line. In 1913, fashion designer Mario Prada founded the label Prada along with his brother Martino. At first it was a shop that produced leather goods and imported luggage. In 1978 his granddaughter Miuccia Prada took over the company, and her design ideas paved a new direction for Prada as she expanded with the addition of new products. It didn’t take long for the company to become an influential fashion house thanks to its originality, and in 1993 it expanded with a subsidiary named Miu Miu. Prada also produced a couple of mobile phones in collaboration with LG Electronics in 2007.

The House of Chanel had its humble beginnings in 1909 with the designer Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel pursued millinery. She sold the hats she made to affluent individuals, and at the same time she made connections with members of the upper class. Soon enough Chanel expanded to include clothes and fragrances, and the extremely popular Chanel No. 5 perfume further catapulted the brand’s reputation to greater heights. Businessman Thierry Hermès established the first Hermès branch in 1837 but as a workshop for award-winning carriage harnesses and leather goods for equestrians. The brand expanded to include clothing, timepieces, accessories, and handbags. Their namesake scarves became an important part of French culture, and the brand’s rapid expansion made its way to the United States. It did experience a brief decline in the 70s until things were turned around in the next decade after an expansion of new items.

The brand was founded in Florence, Italy, in 1921 by Guccio Gucci, first as a fine leather good shop. Later on it expanded to Rome, Milan, and Florence, creating shoes, handbags, silks, and loafers. After World War II, the Gucci crest became very well-known in Florence. Gucci made its way to New York in 1953, and in the next decade the brand became an international status symbol, attracting celebrities to pose for magazine covers wearing the brand’s products.  In the late 90s there were more than 70 stores around the globe, and its success continued with consistent product expansions.

Louis Vuitton was an apprentice for a box-maker during his teenage years in 1837. His products became in-demand, and soon enough Vuitton expanded to a larger workshop, and later on worked under the countess Eugenie de Montijo. Vuitton’s son Georges carried on after his father’s death, and built the company into global dominance. Now Louis Vuitton has also expanded with ready-to-wear, jewelry, sunglasses, books, and watches. The brand also boasts almost 4,000 branches around the world, with a revenue of $10 billion in 2016.
