LA LA LAND's Justin Hurwitz won his first of two awards at the 2017 Oscars in the category of Music (Original Score). Hurwitz was also nominated, and won, along with lyricists Benj Pasek and Justin Paul in the category of Music (Original Song) for "City Of Stars" from the same film.
Hurwitz, Pasek and Paul were also nominated in that same category for "Audition (The Fools Who Dream)" from LA LA LAND. Josh Hurwitz's wins were two of six for the film, which had a stunning 14 Oscar nominations. Other wins included Emma Stone for Actress in a Leading Role and Damien Chazelle for Directing (also the youngest in Oscar history to win the award).
Hurwitz made sure to thank the young director, Damien Chazelle, saying "I'm so glad I met you." Little did he know that he'd soon be right back up on stage, rattling off the names he had skipped before. Other nominees in the category included Mica Levi for JACKIE, Dustin O'Halloran and Hauschka for LION, Nicholas Britell for MOONLIGHT and Thomas Newman for PASSENGERS.
Everybody whose work is on-screen in any way in this movie, I was looking at your work as I was scoring the picture. I was looking at what you did when I was scoring the picture and that's what inspired me, so thank you to everybody who worked on this movie.
