Five delegates to the second national
council meeting of the Niger Delta holding in Igbokoda, in the Igbokoda
Local Government Area of Ondo State, were killed in an auto accident on
Tuesday...
The PUNCH learnt that
the accident occurred on Ore-Okitipupa Expressway, at Ode Aye town, in
the Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The delegates, whose identities were not
known as of press time, were travelling from Akure, the state capital,
to Igbokoda for the summit, which Vice President Yemi Osibajo was to
preside over.
It was also gathered that four other delegates were injured in the accident.
The accident reportedly involved three vehicles — a Volkswagen Golf, a Mercedes Benz and a truck.
A source said, “The Volkswagen Golf was
heading towards Okitipupa while the truck and the Mercedes Benz car were
facing the opposite direction. They had a head-on collision at the Ode
Aye end of the Ore-Okitipupa Expressway.”
However, the Police Public Relations
Officer in the state, Mr. Femi Joseph, said one life was lost in the
crash while other people were critically injured.
He said the deceased had been deposited
in the mortuary of the Ondo State Specialists’ Hospital, Okitipupa,
while the injured were receiving treatment in the same hospital.
“I can confirm that one person died in
the accident, but many people were injured and they are in a critical
condition at the hospital,” Joseph said.
