Whether you are relaxed, natural, transitioning, texturized or have a cut, there are some tools that every woman should have so as to maintain and give their hair all the protection it deserves.
Nothing ruins your hair than using the wrong tools or not having the necessary tools. After 2 years of going natural, I discovered I didn’t get the desired result until I started using the right tools. When it comes to hair tools, there are many options out there to help maintain your hair but here are a few tools that every hair needs and should definitely have.These are:-
1) WIDE TOOTH COMB: Comb is one of the essential tools for natural hair. Once your hair reaches an inch long, using a wide tooth comb would be the best option for detangling your hair. It helps to detangle the hair more effectively without causing a lot of hair fall and preventing hair breakage.
2) RAT TAIL COMB: A Rat tail comb has a combing region of closely-spaced teeth at one end and a long thin “tail – like” handle. A tail comb has thin teeth compared to the wide tooth comb which has wide spacing. The rat tail comb is not good to comb your hair but can be used to part your hair into sections. It is a great option to part your hair to make washing easy and when making your protective style. Although the metal rat comb is recommended over the plastic rat comb because the plastic tail could crack.I advice if you are using the plastic type ensure you check that the ends are good before using them.
3) SPRAY BOTTLE: They are bottles that can be used to spray fluids.It sounds simple but one of the best investment you can make.Spray bottle is good to moisturize, rehydrate and refresh your hair with a bit of water and conditioner.It makes it easier to evenly distribute moisturizer to your hair to ease styling.
4) SATIN SCARF/BONNET/PILLOW CASE: When you have reached the end of the day and ready to fall out on your bed, covering your hair should be a priority. It is more than just protecting your style or maintaining the look.Satin scarf/bonnet/pillow case actually protect your hair from damage when you are sleeping.The cotton pillow cases drain the hair of moisture like a paper towel soaked up in water.The Satin and silk are less abrasive to your hair and highly recommended compared to your regular hair net.
5) COTTON T -SHIRT: The T-shirt trick didn’t make much sense to me for a long time despite being natural for more than 3 years now. It was recently I decided to use one of my old clean T shirts and I must say it made a whole lot of difference compared to using a towel.Drying your hair with a standard towel can absorb too much moisture and rough up the cuticles causing extra frizz. A T- shirt is light weight enough to soak up some of the moisture and isn’t abrasive to pull your strand apart.
6) APPLICATOR BOTTLE: An applicator bottle can come in handy when oiling your scalp.It also helps you get in between any protective style.
7) PLASTIC PROCESSING /SHOWER CAP: They are great for protecting style in the shower and holding in moisture for a deep conditioning.After applying your deep condition simply cover your hair with a plastic cap for 15-30 minutes. Your body heat helps the ingredients in your deep conditioner absorb into your hair follicles allowing for more moisturised hair.
8) BUTTERFLY CLIPS: They are handy tools to have when detangling, separating or styling your hair. They apply enough pressure to hold your sections without pulling your hair or damaging your hair. Open the butterfly clips and close the parted twisted section to enable it to stay in place.
9) HAIR STEAMER /HEAT CAP: It adds moisture to the hair in the form of moist heat (steam).The moisture heat from the steamer helps lift the hair cuticles, making your conditioner and the moisture from the steam to penetrate and absorb into your hair resulting into a revitalized hair.Although this can be done in a salon an investment in it will, in the long run, pay off.
In conclusion, irrespective of the hair type you have, I highly recommend you to invest in these essential tools for your hair as it will literally help maintain your hair and reduce hair breakage.
