Chairman
of Enugu State Urban Renewal Committee, Chris Offor, has appealed to
residents, to support development programmes by refraining from
indiscriminate dumping of refuse, and allow easy flow of water...
Doing this, Offor said, would avoid incidence of flooding during the rains.
Offor also urged residents to assist the
state government in cleaning up the clogged drainage system in their
respective areas, and stressed that Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuany’s
administration is poised to provide massive infrastructure and address
other basic needs of the people as well as protect lives and property.
The committee chairman said this at the
university town of Nsukka, during a facility tour of the area, to review
ongoing, development projects and the level of water flow during the
rains.
Offor commended Governor Ugwuanyi for
quality projects being executed in the state and his proactive response
towards averting some unforeseen challenges in some of the facilities,
especially during the rainy season.
He maintained that “the present
administration is geared towards safeguarding its infrastructure as well
as protecting the lives and property of the citizens” in the overall
interest of the state.
The chairman assured residents all that needed to be corrected would be done before the next rainy season.
Responding, a cross section of residents
praised the governor for his commitment to good governance and their
wellbeing of the people, and regretted that dumping waste along water
channel was the cause of the upsurge of water in some parts of
Nsukka.
A catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Charles Ugwu commended Ugwuanyi for
constructing these roads in his administration’s current urban renewal
efforts.
provided a reliable drainage system that
can make these roads very durable, but the people have decided to block
the drainage with refuse thereby causing water overflow during heavy
downpour”. He enjoined the inhabitants to cooperate with the government
to develop the state.
Also speaking, a legal practitioner,
Barrister Victor Ozioko applauded the governor’s immediate response to
the challenges, saying that the quick intervention has distinguished him
as “a man endowed with fellow feelings”.
