Ten states and Abuja have not registered
their athletes for the 2017 National Youth Games, which starts on
September 7 in Ilorin, Kwara State...
The competition will hold at the University of Ilorin and will end on September 17.
Our correspondent learnt that 26 states
have already indicated interest to compete at the third edition of the
competition, which is organized to discover talents for the country in
various sports.
The competition would also be used to select the country’s representatives at the 2018 Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires.
It was learnt that Anambra, Bayelsa,
Edo, Ekiti, Enugu and Kogi states have yet to register their athletes.
Others are Ondo, Sokoto, Taraba, Zamfara and the Federal Capital
Territory, Abuja.
The organizers said 2,522 athletes –
1,418 male and 1,104 female – have so far been registered for the NYG.
The state with the highest number of athletes is Kwara with 184 while
Lagos and Bauchi states have 179 and 152 athletes respectively. Delta
have registered 144 athletes while Rivers registered 138 and Plateau had
137 registered.
Others states are Oyo (125 athletes),
Akwa Ibom (109 athletes), Benue (107 athletes), Kaduna (98 athletes) and
Imo with 97 registered athletes.
