A statement in Ado-Ekiti by the Permanent Secretary of the state’s Ministry of Health and Human Services, Dr. (Mrs) Folakemi Olomojobi, explained that the first phase of the medical outreach programme would hold in about 40 designated centers spread across eight Local Government Areas of the state. Olomojobi noted that the free health mission forms part of the first installment of the deliverable s encapsulated in Governor Fayemi’s vision on health.
She explained that the primary focus of the programme included achieving the health-related Sustainable Development goals (SDGs) which, among others, included boosting Maternal and Child Health; giving fresh impetus to the control of diseases such as Malaria, HIV/AIDs and Tuberculosis. She also kisted the pursuit of Universal Health Coverage as a social commitment of government as well as commencing a public health effort to localize the global efforts to give attention to noncommunicable medical disorders such as hypertension and complications, diabetes as well as Eye pathologies that could lead to blindness.
The Permanent Secretary noted that services that would be provided during the first phase of the programme include screening for Diabetes and Hypertension- which constitutes an alarming silent killer in our society; HIV screening; treatment for common ailments including skin diseases, dental conditions, nutrition related deficiencies and neglected Tropical Diseases such as onchocerciasis and schistosomiasis ; Screening for Cataract which will be followed up by Cataract surgeries while other eye treatment will be given on the mission sites.
Olomojobi added that medical experts at the mission would also engage in Prevention and Health Promotion exercise such as general health talks; promotion of maternal & child health ; practical demonstration sessions on hand washing; food preparation and fortification; family planning services, as well Ward based immunization services and distribution & hanging of Long Lasting Insecticide Treated Nets in respective households According to her, patients requiring referral at the mission would be referred and supported to secondary and tertiary health facilities for further management.
The Permanent Secretary urged people of the state to visit the nearest designated center of the mission closest to their neighborhood to enable them benefit from the 10 day programme. She said that Governor Kayode Fayemi would formally flag off the programme at Ikere Ekiti on Wednesday 23rd January, 2019.”
