Six Peoples Demecratic Party (PDP) States Filed Suit Against The FG in The Supreme Court

Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, and Sokoto are the six state governments that have filed lawsuits against the federal government in the Supreme Court about the 2023 presidential and National Assembly elections.

The six state attorneys general brought the lawsuit, pleading with the Supreme Court to become involved in the recently held general elections. They predicated their assertions on the potential for civil disobedience and a collapse in public order.

The Peoples Democratic Party, the primary adversary, is in charge of the six states (PDP).

They are contesting the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for president, Bola Tinubu, being declared the winner.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced Mr. Tinubu as the victor of the presidential race in Nigeria on Wednesday.

The six states claimed in their lawsuit that Mr. Tinubu's announcement violated both the Election Act and INEC's own established rules, notably with regard to uploading results to the IREV via the BVAS.

The main tenor of their argument is that if INEC is permitted to stand by its assertions that Mr. Tinubu won the election without first abiding by its own (INEC's) operational procedures, there will be public disturbance.

According to a statement from the PDP presidential office, the governors of the applicant states, as the Chief Law Officers of their respective states, have a legal duty to take all necessary measures to ensure that there is no breakdown of law and order in their states.

On February 28, just before INEC released its final results, the lawsuit was filed.

According to report, the APC also filed a lawsuit to thwart any attempt to halt the collation and announcement of the presidential election results.

The six PDP states had asked for a court order to stop INEC from disclosing the results.

As of Friday, the Supreme Court has not heard arguments in the case.
