Jason Wu is taking off for China this weekend. When he returns in a week or so, he’ll head down to Tulum for a holiday at the beach. Travel came up a lot during this morning’s Pre-Fall presentation, not only because the busy designer is ready for a vacation, but also because his contemporary-priced Grey Jason Wu collection is built for the nomadic woman....
The pieces are easy, packable, transitional, and pretty. This season, Wu focused on menswear-inspired separates and outerwear and did well with both. Highlights included a loose-fitting gray pin-striped suit and a boxy, oversize trench that unzipped at the sides to make a cropped jacket. The slip dresses in black, brown, and blush pink made for a nice minimalist touch from a designer who tends to favor glamour.

What’s always been impressive about Wu is his ability to connect with so many different types of women, be they politicians, entrepreneurs, or movie stars. In his Grey line, he’s charting new and slightly more affordable territory while managing to retain the integrity and quality of the clothes he makes for his main label. The knits here look and feel luxurious, as do the quilted tops, dresses, and skirts that incorporate a vintage floral fabric.
