No fewer than 48 inmates of Lapai,
Agaie, Bida, Kontagora, Kagara and New Bussa prisons in Niger State were
granted pardon by the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Maria Dzukogi,
during her annual visit to the prisons.
The CJ granted pardon to 16 inmates, who
were held in the Kontagora and Kagara prisons respectively, on the
grounds of good conduct and ill health.
Dzukogi admonished the discharged
inmates to be law-abiding wherever they found themselves, adding that
those of them that had learned one vocational skill or the other should
put same to productive use after their release.
The CJ told the prisons officials that
her visit to the Niger State prisons was to find ways of decongesting
prisons in the state.
She also discharged 21 inmates in the
Lapai, Agaie and Bida prisons and advised them to be of good behaviour
so that the society would receive them back.
In the New Bussa prison in the Borgu
Local Government Area of the state, Dzukogi assured the management that
vehicle used in conveying inmates would be refurbished.
She disclosed that the state government had agreed to provide the prison with a borehole to alleviate their water problem.
The Chief Judge also discharged 11 inmates on health grounds and good conduct.
